Two of the five films in Hinge's European campaign, dubbed into French. The translated script was supplied: everything came down to the casting and to the performance, because these films rest entirely on an inner voice.
The setting. Hinge launched “The Moment I Knew”, the second chapter of its European campaign “Designed to be Deleted”. Five films drawn from stories collected from users, rolled out across nine markets. We produced the French dub of two of them.
Casting first. The client set a very precise selection criterion: the actors, male voice and female voice alike, had to match the characters on screen. Every voice was chosen under that constraint before anything else.
A lot of emotion, without laying it on. These films are about the moment you realize you have found the right person. The emotion runs high and yet the voice has to stay natural, intimate, as if you were inside the character's head. The whole job of voice direction was finding that balance: make people feel a lot, show little.
The challenge: dubbing a thought, not a line of dialogue. An inner voice is not played like a confidence, and that was the whole subtlety of the project. In these films, what the character says is not said out loud: it is a thought the viewer hears. The right tone is not that of a story or a secret told to someone. The voice had to sound like a sentence you say to yourself, without thinking.
