Two EPs of songs for toddlers, released by West One Music under the LEGO DUPLO brand on 17 February 2021. Ten tracks, twenty-five minutes. The backing tracks already existed: we adapted the lyrics into French and recorded the vocals.
Two EPs, ten songs. Six nursery rhymes on one, four songs on the other: ten tracks in all, made for toddlers and released under a brand everyone knows, LEGO DUPLO. We adapted the lyrics into French and recorded the vocals.
The music itself does not move. The instrumental tracks reached us already finished. So there was no adding a bar or shifting a note to make the words fit. It is on us to fit the lyrics entirely to the music.
A nursery rhyme is not translated, it is rewritten. The syllable count, where the stresses fall, the breaths: all of it has to land on a melody written for another language. And the result has to stay simple and natural enough for a three-year-old to sing along. So there is no picking a complicated word just because it fills the bar.
Making people forget the song came from another language. Once the lyrics are adapted, the artists have to sing them as though they had always been written in French. The words have to fall naturally on the melody, with no forced syllable and no phrasing that sounds translated. Mission accomplished: our French versions play on the official LEGO channels and on Mini Récré, the French-language channel of the Moonbug group.
