Bloopies is an animated series on the Kitoons channel, made for children. The voices are adults', pitched to sound like children's, and they had to come back identical from one episode and one season to the next.
The context. Kitoons is a YouTube channel devoted to animated series for children. We worked across several seasons and on three of its series: Bloopies, Cry Babies and VIP Pets.
Adults in children's voices. On Bloopies the characters are dubbed by adults who pitch their voice to recreate a child's, with an age and a personality. That transformation sits on top of the dubbing work: performing the character is not enough. Here the actors have to record in a voice that is not their own.
Creating a voice, then knowing how to find it again. That is where the real difficulty sits. An actor is assigned one or more characters, each with its own vocal identity. Once it is created, we have to hold each character's identity from the beginning to the end of a session, and from one episode to the next. For weeks, sometimes months.
Consistency across seasons. In a series, the viewer learns a character's voice very fast. A shift in pitch, in placement or in energy is heard straight away. Our direction work is about finding the right markers again at every new session, so the character stays recognizable from one episode and one season to the next.
