Yoto sells a device that tells children stories. For its presentation video we dubbed into French the children filmed on screen, the parents and the narrating voice, under one constraint of the commercial format: follow the original as closely as possible, adding nothing.
Finding the right voices. The video shows children and adults on screen, and those were the people to dub. So we gathered young and adult actors whose age, timbre and energy matched the profiles you see on picture.
Children, with very tight sync. On a cartoon, the performance sometimes leaves a little more room. A breath, a laugh or a sound can dress a line. Here the young actors had to follow the children in the original video precisely: their phrasing, their pauses, their rhythm. And all of it while keeping the performance natural. That was the real challenge of this project.
Children, parents, a narrator. The film does not rest on children's voices alone. There are the parents' voices too, and a voice over that dubs nobody: it narrates. The project brought together a panel of children's and adults' voices, in different styles.
Two audiences to convince. The Yoto device is made for children, they are the ones who use it to listen to stories. But the parents are the ones who decide to buy. So the video has to speak to both at once. And we have to think about that double audience at every step. A lot of it plays out in the choice of voices and in the direction: keeping the spontaneity and the energy that speak to the child, while putting the parents at ease.
